No wind? No problem! Our Zeeland “Kitesurf” trip that turned into everything else
By Wavers SC Ambassador Nektaria
If there’s one thing we’ve learned as kitesurfers in the Netherlands, it’s this: Mother Nature does not read your WhatsApp trip planning threads.
A few weekends ago, we, the fearless, salt-stained souls of the Wavers Social Club, packed our cars to the roof with all the gear. Boards, kites, harnesses, wetsuits, even that one sketchy pump someone’s had since 2015. We booked two adorable tiny houses (so Instagrammable), two people slept in their vans (of course they did, classic wind chaser move), and we set off for Zeeland, ready to live in the water all weekend long. It was a public holiday Friday, we were pumped, and the stoke levels were high.
Plot twist:
We arrived to… 0 knots. Zero. Nada. Not a breeze. Not even a cheeky gust to get our hopes up.
Cue existential crisis in neoprene.
But we didn’t let a minor detail like no wind ruin our weekend. Oh no. We’re water maniacs, not quitters.
Enter: The Great sport substitution Olympics
Like any group of committed Type-A outdoor freaks, we pivoted fast (ok, slowly, but more on that in a sec).
Morning runs: Split into two groups, the 7am sunrise warriors and the 9am “I came here to sleep” squad.
Bike rides & hikes: We discovered Zeeland’s dry land is surprisingly scenic when you’re not zipping past it at 30 knots.
Beach cooking & dancing: Because if we couldn’t fly our kites, we’d at least vibe like we could.
Sunsets? 10/10.
Food? Mostly pasta and pizza.
Vibes? Unreal.
The psychology of a windless waver
Here’s what’s funny: when there’s wind, we’re military efficient. Up in 10 minutes. Suited up. Rigged. Launched.
But with no wind?
13 people + 2 dogs trying to decide what to do turned into a full-on strategy session.
It took us hours to leave the house. There were whiteboards. Timetables. Passive-aggressive coffee slurping.
We achieved peak inefficiency, our brains literally short-circuited without a forecast to guide us.
Moral of the story?
Even with no wind, Zeeland gave us a weekend to remember. We laughed, we sweat (on land, ew), we bonded, and we did not get blown away. Literally. But spiritually? Totally.
To the next trip, may the wind be strong, the vans be cozy, and the group chats slightly more decisive.
Until then, keep chasing waves (and backup plans).
